2024 Oscar Predictions — When Barbie Met Oppie
by Sasha Stone
We’ve made it through a very strange year. It was the best of times with Barbenheimer. It was the worst of times with the strike by the actors and the writers that brought a struggling industry to its knees. It was a time of extreme political division where one movie, The Sound of Freedom, rose up from a grassroots movement on the Right to land in the top ten highest-grossing pictures of the year, besting both Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Oscars 2024: Best Actress Is Too Close to Call (Take Our Poll)
by Sasha Stone
Most pundits are rallying around for Killers of the Flower Moon and Lily Gladstone, but a potential win by Emma Stone in particular — or maybe even Sandra Huller — looms on the horizon. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want Lily Gladstone to win. I do. The Oscars have never gone to the person who gave “the best performance” because everyone has a different definition of what that is. Film critics, for instance, have always fallen for the more poker-faced stoic realism, where actors tend to like the more showy performances. MORE
2024 Oscar Predictions: The Final Oscar Squad Rankings Ahead of Sunday’s Ceremony
It’s been a while since the Oscar Squad last weighed in on the 2024 Oscar season. With the awards airing next Sunday, it seemed like a good time for the Squad to assemble for the final time. For this year’s Oscar season, that is.
A lot has happened since our last ranking. We’ve had guild after guild after guild announce their winners with only the Writers Guild of America holding out until mid-April. From the guilds that have announced (SAG, PGA, ACE, etc), one thing we all knew already became crystal clear — Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is our undeniable front runner for several major awards. Not only is it the front runner, but it’s poised to sweep many of the categories in which it’s nominated. If the Oscar Squad’s predictions are 100% foolproof, then Oppenheimer will emerge with 8 wins. That seems about right, although it could win more. There are bound to be surprises. The trick is figuring out where they are. MORE
Oscar Predictions 2024: Good As Gold’s Final Predictions or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Predict the Bomb
by Mark Johnson
What a remarkable year it has been for movies. There were so many great films it feels unfair that 2024 has to follow in its footsteps. That’s one act I wouldn’t want to follow as a filmmaker. With so many incredible options, its still a bit of a surprise that the Producers Guild (PGA) and Oscar Best Picture nominations aligned ten-for-ten for the first time in history. Leading the pack, Oppenheimer emerged as an undeniable force, sweeping top honors across at PGA, Directors Guild (DGA), Screen Actors Guild (SAG), Globes, British Academy (BAFTA), and Critics’ Choice (CCA) – an achievement only shared by four other films since SAG’s inception in 1995: American Beauty (1999), The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003), Slumdog Millionaire (2008), and Argo (2012). All four of those films went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars, something we fully expect Oppenheimer to achieve on March 10. MORE
